I don’t mean this as a damning comment at all, but I believe Skattebo will be the worst of the best RBs in the 2025 class. I don’t think Skattebo is bad, he’s a strong every-down back but will he be able to find success at the next level? I’m unsure.

Skattebo began his college football career at Sacramento State for two years, running through the FCS level of football on his way to winning Big Sky OPOY in his second/last season of FCS football. He eventually found his way onto the Arizona State team for his Junior year where he was good, then in 2024 he exploded, breaking multiple school records and finishing 5th in Heisman voting.

Skattebo is an interesting runner. He lacks burst and high-end speed, but if he can get up to speed, he’s tough to bring down. He has great vision and balance, and he’s smooth in the process of getting upfield, but if you can get to him before he gets going he won’t break free. If Skattebo does get up to speed the vision and agility start to take over, running around, over, or through defenders like it was an art. He has a knack for finding running lanes.

The best competition he faced was in the CFB playoff against Texas, where the Longhorns' defense swallowed him up and committed to getting to him before the LoS. That plan combined with the SEC-sized/talented defense neutered Skattebo’s attack. Skattebo still had a very good game with over 200 yards from scrimmage, as he was the only thing working for ASUs offense, but he wasn’t breaking as many tackles and was getting taken down behind the line more than usual.

Skattebo had some of the best-receiving numbers among RBs this season. I only track data for players that may go into the Draft, so among Seniors and some Juniors he led the way quite handily. Despite that, I don’t think he is some receiving back extraordinaire, it didn’t seem like he was using his hands, but rather his body… does he not trust his hands, was he not trained properly? I’m not sure, but in my eyes, there is cause for concern.

I see a path to success for Cam in the NFL, and if there’s one thing he’s proven in his time as a football player, you should not count this kid out. Not only does he play with a high motor and a chip on his shoulder, but Skattebo is one of those athletes who is good at everything he does. Against Texas in the Peach Bowl, he threw a 42-yard TD pass, he throws a nice pass actually, and he has a history of punting where he averages 44 yards per kick.

RecRtg = Combination of receiving stats, adjusted stats, and strength of schedule.

adj. = stats weighted against strength of schedule.

Draft Outlook:

Currently tracking right around the 100th prospect in the draft, I think Cam’s strong Combine and favorable measurements during that trip will get him drafted in the 4th round. Skattebo’s lack of competition and FCS beginnings will be a concern for some teams but I like him as a nice wrinkle in the playbook. A shorter Taysom Hill hope.

Career Outlook:

I see an uphill battle for Skattebo, but I’m sure he will welcome it. He has made a habit of proving doubters wrong. I think ultimately Cam will mostly be a special teamer with hopes he can develop into a change of pace back, or maybe there’s a visionary out there looking for their Taysom Hill.
